What three movies, underappreciated in your opinion, do you find yourself recommending all the time?
1) !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (2008) - Bill Pullman, Chris Pine, a young Eliza Dushku, Dennis Farina, and Alan Rickman at his Alan Rickmaniest; about the early California wine industry and the famous blind taste test against French wines. Damn I love this movie;
2) !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (2015) - screenwriter !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (Roman Holiday, Spartacus, Papillon) is persecuted and blacklisted in 1950s Hollywood. Bryan Cranston as good as you’ve ever seen him, Helen Mirren, Diane Lane;
3) !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (1976) - Zero Mostel, Woody Allen, Herschel Bernardi - a nebbish poses as a screenwriter to submit scripts written by blacklisted writers. Funny at times and a good look at what the blacklist did to its victims.

Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)- My favorite movie weirdly enough, could not get my friends to watch it till the end.
A Serious Man (2009)- the story of an ordinary man’s search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and “F-Troop” is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik, a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith that she is leaving him. Larry’s unemployable brother Arthur is sleeping on the couch, his son Danny is a discipline problem and a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter Sarah is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. Struggling for equilibrium, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person — a mensch — a serious man?
Amour (2012) - Critics loved it, but again every single person I spoke to found it too bleak, sad and monotonous. I loved it, it made me cry in public which is something I had never done (my grandmother always told me crying in public was classless and a sign of weakness). The narrative focuses on an elderly couple, Anne and Georges, who are retired music teachers with a daughter who lives abroad. Anne suffers a stroke which paralyses her on the right side of her body.

The Way of The Gun (2000) - Ryan Phillippe and Benicio del Toro in a kidnapping plot. The story is simple, but the gun play is realistic and not over the top Hollywood shootouts.
Hot Fuzz (2007) - Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as cops investigating a series of murders in a small English village. Shenanigans ensue.

THX 1138 (1971): Great sci-fi with a Lola T70
Rubber (2010): I love the monologue.
Amelie (2001): Reasonably well known, but properly odd.

Confidence (2003) - A great grifter flick featuring Edward Burns, Rachel Weisz, Dustin Hoffman, Andy Garcia, Paul Giamatti, Donal Logue, and Luis Guzman.
The Equalizer (2014) - Great Denzel flick.
What Dreams May Come (1998) - Robin Williams at his best.

Similarly, lots of people in that age bracket haven’t seen The Shining. They are unaware of the first five Planet of the Apes movies. And I always recommend Three Days of the Condor - it’s among my top 10.

Fun fact - Young Frankenstein, released the same year as Blazing Saddles, 1974. The original Frankenstein (1931) had magnificent sets for the scenes in the la-BORE-atory. Mel Brooks called up Universal and asked if they still had the sets, and if so could he use them. The sets you see in the 1974 movie are the same ones used in the 1931 movie. So cool.
